Sadly the church is still in a bad state of repair and many of the problems you mention here have got gradually worse. However, you may be pleased to know that a group of Friends interested in the church and its history got together in June 2016 to form the Friends of Holnest Church, which has the aim of supporting the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the building. The group has had a promising start, having already gained much support from people local to the area and those further afield.

We have a website (www.friendsofholnestchurch.wordpress.com) which includes a bit more about the infamous Drax mausoleum and the church's troubled past. Glad you managed to get into the church - do come and visit again.Friends of Holnest Churchhttp://www.friendsofholnestchurch.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14279610.post-60627381524950726922016-02-01T23:55:27.332+00:002016-02-01T23:55:27.332+00:00Interesting!

This church web page
has an extract from the book and a picture of the scene. Note however that the illustration in the book shows the spiral as clockwise rather than anti-clockwise as it should be.

Personally I'm definitely good at heights and I declined to climb the outside of the tower - I regretted it afterwards, but now that I know that someone who is normally good with heights got vertigo I feel a bit better.
link

Dave

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14279610.post-31324628875660626662014-01-20T12:15:55.763+00:002014-01-20T12:15:55.763+00:00The Knight is now resting 2 miles away in St peter...The Knight is now resting 2 miles away in St peter's Church, Bromyard.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11505045857121169965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14279610.post-66012391512012956372012-11-26T14:38:24.623+00:002012-11-26T14:38:24.623+00:00St James church is the preceding entry to this one...St James church is the preceding entry to this one! I did not visit the Methodist church.

As for my comments, I think I saw a bank (Lloyds?) in the centre, which geographically makes Barton a town! As for the pubs, I walked from St James up to the catholic church and back. The two pubs I passed were most definitely closed on a summer Friday lunchtime. I am glad there are four others but I did not see them. I ended up with a nice lunch in Yoxall.

Thanks for the tip regarding Rugeley which I have to set foot in, and for leaving a comment.
